England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

The Irish and Scotland also share a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools play out according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
